Does leaving your iPod in a docking station damage the battery?

I've just purchased an LG docking station for my iPod Classic. While using it for the first time, I noticed that the iPod also charges up via the docking station, even when I've turned the docking station into standby mode.

I've read on several posts that the iPod batteries eventually start to deteriorate after several hundred charges. My question is, will leaving my iPod in the docking station (so it's therefore permanently on charge) eventually lead to my iPod battery being damaged/deteriorating?

Prior to this I've always charged my iPod via my PC when syncing to iTunes.

Cheers.
