Syncing Outlook Express hangs

I tried to setup auto syncing an IPhone 3G to Outlook Express for a friend. The only option on the Info/Calendar section was a Windows Address Book (.wab). The sync hangs when syncing CONTACTS (the progress bar indicates it is syncing, but it goes on forever (left it for 20 minutes); about 30 contacts in file so should take a few seconds). I cannot find a .wab file anywhere on the pc. I understand .wab file is embedded someone in the Outlook Express app.

Any idea re what is happening/how to resolve?
