Here is some data from a traceroute test I ran. I've been having some intermittent issues with ping. There will be days when my ping is at 20 ms, and then an hour later it will jump to 800 ms. Currently, I'm on a wireless network on my relatively new iMac. I have high speed cable from Cox in Southern California. Anyone have any ideas.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 3.06 ghz intel core 2 duo

Have you correlated it with time of day? With cable ISPs it's typical for things to slow down as your neighbors hog bandwidth in the evenings. If it's slowest during evenings and weekends, I'd suggest what you're seeing is not abnormal.

Hey John,

Thanks for replying to my post. I was under the impression that bandwidth was affected by high traffic, but I wasn't aware that it could affect latency as well. The weird thing is that my download speeds seem to stay the same regardless of ping.

To answer your question though, there doesn't seem to be a particular pattern to the the increase in latency. Someone told me yesterday that I should buy a really long cable and plug my Mac directly to my cable modem to see if that would eliminate the ping. I'll post back with the results.
