iPod EQ distortion - When will Apple fix it?

When I used my iPod touch for the first time I was very disappointed. I turned on the EQ to get a little more bass and all I got was heavy digital clipping. Seems that this has been a problem for years now, which is also frequently discussed on the internet. Nevertheless Apple did not care about this issue so far, which is unacceptable for such an expensive product. I don't know a single cheap device that also suffers from EQ distortions.

By the way, the fix would be extremely easy: The highest boost in the frequency response of every EQ preset could be stored within the preset and the EQ input signal can be attenuated by this factor. This would add virtual headroom for boosting frequency bands.

These are only a few lines of code, so why doesn't Apple fix it? Is there any official statement?

P.S. Please don't answer if you want to recommend any pseudo-fixes that come to the conclusion "normalize your mp3s to a lower loudness" (these mp3gain fixes...) as these are inappropriate and this is not the topic here.
