Adjusting the Volume with ATV?

I run my ATV sound directly into my stereo's preamp, and I've notice that the iPhone Remote for ATV allows me to adjust the volume from my iPhone. Since the preamp is does not appear to be increasing its signal to my amp:

#1. How is the volume being increased? Does the ATV have an internal amp?

#2. How can I be assured I'm no losing audio quality if the ATV is increasing the volume?

if you are playing movies/videos, then the appletv has no volume control at all, it simply passes the audio straight to your output device. it is the output device that control the volume.

for music, the appletv has some volume control but it has to be enabled in the settings first. this can only be adjusted using the appletv remote as far as i am aware.

personally i don't see the point in the music volume control, as i prefer to have the output device (ie amp) to control all the volume.

It won't have a power amp if that is what you are meaning. If your connection is digital; the digital signal will be sent through through the DAC in your receiver then to a pre-amp in your receiver and on to the power amp and to your speakers. Information about the volume is carried by the digital signal to the receiver which is responsible for adjustment to the analogue output needed for the speakers.

If your connection is analogue; the DAC and pre amp in the Apple tv generate an analogue line level output which ordinarily would be fixed (subject to variation from the audio itself) so that the only volume adjustment you could make would be on the receiver. When you adjust the volume via the Apple tv, what you are in fact doing is adjusting the line level out to the amplifier.

The volume adjustment on the Apple tv allows you to adjust the line level between zero and it's normal level (no volume control), if it were able to increase this level above normal level then yes you would possibly hear distortion, but the Apple tv doesn't do this.

When you say unpack, do you mean explain.

1. DAC is the element that converts a digital signal into an analogue one.

2. I assume there is a pre-amp whether it be part of the DAC or a stand alone component. It's function is to adjust output to the required line level.

3. Line level is the strength of an analogue audio signal, between two devices. Generally speaking line levels for consumer devices are all similar. Line level is a ratio of the output voltage against the power.

This is without any specific knowledge of the inside of the tv, this is how consumer devices that play digital content and output them as analogue signals work.
