well actually this depends on where you live and what keyboard settings you have chosen
in us keep the "shift" key pressed and type "\" this will give you "|"
if you live in germany like me this will be "alt" + "7"
if you live elsewhere you can go to to the system preferences > international
select the input menu tab and active - if not done already - "show input menu in menu bar" at the bottom of the window.
then in the menu bar a little flag of your country will appear. when you click it you can select "show keyboard viewer" this will give you a live view of your keyboard.
when you press shift or alt or both the keys will change accordingly.
this is quite useful if you look for a special character

Open System Preferences > International > Input Menu. Turn on Keyboard Viewer. A flag icon will appear in your menu bar. Click on it and select Show Keyboard Viewer.
