Same issue. 10.4.11 ... Finder crashing every minute or so after QT 7.6 install. ***?
  • Alan Brownstein Level 1 Level 1 (25 points)
To those who are having the Finder crashing issue, did you use Software Update to install QT 7.6, or the standalone installer? I used Software Update. Trying to determine if perhaps that was the issue.

Also, do you have any third-party codecs installed? In my case, I have Perian 1.1.3 and Flip4MacWMV 2.2.0.49.

I also downloaded QT 7.6. Now Call of duty 2 for Mac (Single player mode) does not open anymore. What should I do?

I am having the same problem but with Civilization IV: Warlords. This is the log that was dumped to the console. Hopefully, it will yeild some insight into the problem.

I've got it too-- really frustrating.

Update to Quicktime 7.6, restart (multiple times). Finder quits at frequent random intervals. Repaired some permissions. Still the same problem. Disk verifies without issue.

A minor update shouldn't wreak this kind of havoc, or require the kind of onerous, overly-cautious voodoo suggested by another poster.

I do subscribe to some cautious voodoo when doing major OS updates like 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. For those I download the Combo updater.

I'm currently downloading the QT 7.6 standalone installer. I'm going to try a re-install....

Sun King...please let us know the results of your re-install. I'm wondering if the problem may be with the SU version of the installer.
  • sun king Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
No luck-- reinstalling from a standalone QT 7.6 package did me no good. Finder still quits at frequent random intervals.
  • Alan Brownstein Level 1 Level 1 (25 points)
Hmmm. Too bad. Although, I wonder if perhaps you would have to manually uninstall all of the files that the SU version of the installer created before re-installing via the standalone.

Otherwise, I just can't figure out what the conflict could be.

Over at xlr8yourmac they are suggesting a possible conflict between QT 7.6 and third party QT add-ons:

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

I installed the latest version of Flip4Mac right along with QT 7.6. I wonder if Flip4Mac is the problem.

Poll: how many of you have Flip4Mac?

Looks like it's Archive and Install time for many people with 10.4.11... I have one system that blows up the Finder every couple of minutes, and one that seems fine as of this writing. None of my 10.5.6 systems ( both PPC & Intel ) seem to have any problems.

Does anyone see anything useful in Console - either in console log or system log? If nothing else, can someone post a crash long (there's one in the 10.4.11 forum, but another would be nice). (I haven't updated yet, but I have a number of 10.4.11 machines that I'd like to apply this update to, as it fixes another issue we've been having).

Some dude on the 'finder crashing after qt 7.6' thread in the 10.4 forums just posted that this fixed it... is that the case for anyone else?

    This worked instantly for me.

As it turns out, I did have an older version of Stuffit Deluxe (v10.0.1) installed, including the contextual menu item and the Stuffit AVR preference pane. After seeing this poist, I decided to totally uninstall Stuffit Deluxe, and all related components. Then I installed the QT 7.6 update from the standalone installer, but after restarting, I still had the exact same problem, i.e. the Finder was caught in a continuous crash loop.

I then looked at some of my other preference panes in System Preferences, and noticed I had an older version of Default Folder (v2.0.2) installed. So I disabled that, and instantly the Finder crashing stopped. So in my case, it might have been a combination of StuffitAVR and an outdated version of Default Folder that was causing the problem. In any case, it has been a while now and the Finder crashing seems to be gone (KNOCK WOOD!).

Yes!!! That did the trick for me!

Installed the QT 7.6 update on a G5 2Ghz DP running 10.4.11 that I use for a couple scanners, and the Finder started to do the restart thing over & over after the restart. I repaired permissions & verified volumes with no luck. Started looking online & luckily found the threads. Maybe that post will help others having issues.
