No system/user interface sounds

i've had my new macbook pro almost 2 weeks now, and since day 1, I can't get system sounds to play. Even when I choose the sounds in the sound prefs, I get nothing. same goes for user interface sounds: i have none

i can play music in itunes, and applications can play sounds, but I get no system sounds or user interface sounds at all. and yes, all settings and everything are set correctly so i should get them. I just don't

has anyone else seen this?
