Front Row soft exit?

Is there a way to exit Front Row and keep my music playing?

I usually hit escape but iTunes seems to have no connection and I have to find and restart the song I was listening to. Maybe if I start the song via iTunes instead of Front Row... but it's such a nice feature to be able to control via the remote.

Not with Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard). In Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger), Front Row would actually open iTunes in the background to play your music. If you exited Front Row, iTunes would still be running. In Leopard, Front Row has direct access to your iTunes library and iTunes itself is not opened. So, if you quit Front Row you quit the application that's playing the music.

If you want to play music without using Front Row, why not just open iTunes directly? The Apple remote will work directly in iTunes.

If you don't have an Apple remote but have a Wi-Fi network, you could use an iPod touch or an iPhone with the 2.0 software and Apple's "Remote" application to remote control your iTunes. There are also third party remote control devices you might be able to use.

So THAT's what they did! I could swear it used to work better. I'll have to try that ... the reason I'm using Front Row is because I can go across the room with only the remote and hitting menu jumps me into that product. Is there a way to have it start iTunes instead? Oh - there is RemoteBuddy - seems sad that a functionality that Apple took away would make me buy an app.

Alas, the iTouch's in the house are not mine - so typically I'd have to pry them out of the owner's hands in order to use them.

I did see that I can control iTunes directly... so that is a solution. There's a few frustrating or maybe just different things about doing this where I'd rather there was a way to just get Front Row to minimize or something. First I've started really liking the continuous volume bar that doesn't click. And when the mac goes to sleep in iTunes you can't wake it up to see what track you are on without stopping your music. (You can in Front Row) Plus this nice album art flying around is nice too. AND I can just grab the remote and start up Front row from across the room. (Remote buddy would probably fix that)

I guess I'm back to stopping my workout at the ends of songs 🙂 And maybe writing to Apple to add this functionality.
