Capturing ProRes 422 SD with a G5?

I know there are limitations with prores hd with g5's, but do you think I can capture from digibeta to a g5 prores SD capture with sdi via decklink and a firewire 800 external. I know this is a strange way to work, but I plan on doing the edit with my MBP when it comes in...thoughts? Final output of project is DVD. Thanks.

DVCpro50 would be a better cleaner choice than DV. It maintains your 4:2:2 color space (which is better for color correction, compositing, green screen, etc) rather than DVs 4:1:1 color space. DVCpro50 will take about twice as much hard drive space as DV does, but 1/3 the space of uncompressed 8bit. FYI DV is 3.4 MB/s, DVCpro50 is 7.0 MB/s, and uncompressed 8bit is 20 MB/s.

hope this helps,

Bru

Digibath,

I was able to capture HDV with ProRes (not HQ) onto my old Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac. The capture lagged behind the camera by about 30% or more (typical) at times which meant that after the footage had ended on the camera, the Mac would still be processing the footage. For an hour tape, it would take about an hour and a half to 2 hours to fully capture and have it processed.

It can be done, it just takes longer but the pros of working in pro res were worth it for me. Don't even try the HQ option as that never worked.

Oh and I was capturing via firewire 400.

Tomstitzer...you are talking about capturing HDV as ProRes...the original poster is talking about capturing DIGIBETA as ProRes. Apples and oranges here. Digibeta is not a firewire format, you need a capture card.

But yes, you can capture HDV as ProRes via firewire with a G5...I have done that. But any format via a capture card...no, you need an Intel or the AJA I/O HD.
