Migration Questions

Hello
Just a few questions on Migration Assistant

I bought a iMac a couple of years ago specifically for music production, but gradually started using it for internet access, email etc. Now I have a MacBook I can get back to using the desktop for what it was intended for. Thing is, their are apps on the iMac which i want to migrate over to the MacBook & ones i dont. So, can you choose which apps/files to migrate? Also, are these apps/files copied? Will they still remain on the host computer?
One more thing... As the MacBook does not have a firewire port, what is the best & fastest way of migrating data? I would imagine migrating over a network would be very slow. USB? how would I go about migrating over USB?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

20"iMac intel core duo 2, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 2.33Ghz, 2GB, 500GB, Firewire 410, 320GB Ext HD. 1TB TC. 1st Gen iPhone 8GB

Migration Assistant can't pick and choose which apps to migrate and which not. it's all or nothing. If you don't want to migrate all the apps, reinstall the ones you need from scratch on the MB.

you can connect the computers by an ethernet cable and use Migration Assistant that way. this is faster than any other option you might try. the only other way would be to clone the iMac hard drive to an external USB drive, connect that to the MB and use Migration Assistant.
