Turn off atv

Is there a way to turn atv off, or is standby the only way to make the status light turn off? And is it pertinent to put it in standby/power off? because I noticed that if i don't put it in standby it will continue to just keep the photo screen saver going. any suggestions on maintaing atv would be appreciated.
