Airport Express: Optical out: Itunes 8 skips, 7 works, Airfoil still skips

For a few weeks now i've been streaming from itunes and airfoil to my AX connected by analogue to my amp...no problem there, everything worked fine. I then purchased a Cambridge Audio DACmagic and went the optical route to improve quality. I experience small jumps in the music...there doesn't seem to be any sequence; they're irregular. It sounds like a small skip on a CD and i can see the signal light flicker off on the DAC for a fraction of second. I can plug the powerbook directly in the DAC optically and there's no problem.

Now, following the advice on a few threads, i've downgraded from itunes 8 to 7. That's solved the problem when streaming from itunes, the optical out from the AX works fine... I'll wait until i'm sure apple have fixed the problem before going back to 8.

However, my current problem is that i regularly listen to last.fm and spotify etc through airfoil. This has the same problem as itunes 8......small skips every 30 seconds or so.

I know it's not the radio stream (works perfectly through analogue and optically direct from laptop)
I know it's not the DAC (work perfectly optically from laptop)
I know it's not the wireless network (works perfectly through the analogue out from AX)

Any advice ??????

OK so as far as we're concerned it's not an inherent fault with the Airport Express N, contrary to Cambridge Audio's response. In addition, the problem with no output between tracks mentioned by Cambridge Audio was apparently fixed many firmware updates ago, here in 2006:

AirPort Express Firmware Updater 6.3 Windows

This update will auto launch when downloaded, and will offer the opportunity to update a number of base stations.

The AirPort Express Firmware Updater addresses reliability and resolves issues with AirTunes, AirPort compatibility, and issues with some third party Routers.

Fixes:

-Resolves issue with Audio dropout when playing to AirPort Express with AirTunes

etc

I disagree that the problem is specific to iTunes 8. For me, playing any other audio through the AEX (using Airfoil) results in the exact same skipping (actually worse). Example: I receive mp3s all the time in Mail. Playing the "preview" version will skip like crazy. Also, playing audio from Safari windows will also result in terrible skipping. No doubt there is something about iTunes 7 that packets the info better or something so that it performs better as many report. However, I am going to side with the opinion of both Emm Labs and Cambridge Audio when they claim that the core of the problem lies with the Airport Express itself. Any thoughts? Boy, I really want this to work!

I have an older Airport Express since 2005 and firmware is 6.3 and it worked
perfectly streaming audio using WiFi. Recently it has been occasionally
dropping Airtunes for a second or so. This happens with itunes 7.5 and itunes 8.2.

I fixed it by stop using Wifi, but connecting the Airport Express directly
to the ethernet port on my iBook and turning off WiFi.

This issue is definitely NOT confined to ITunes v8 as its also in evidence when using Airfoil/Spotify with no ITunes running.

I first became aware of this issue of intermittent stuttering/DAC signal loss with ITunes v8 when streaming wirelessly to AEX over 802.11n connected to a CA DacMagic. I raised this with CA and got the same rather lame support response from CA as noted by a previous poster. What CA fail to mention is that this only seems to effect particular DACs (e.g. theirs) which appear to be more susceptible to losing the AEX signal than others. I have no problems when using a Moodlab DAC for example.

In my opinion this is an AEX/Airtunes loss of signal lock issue which should be primarily addressed by APPLE - but certain DACs appear to be more intolerant of the problem than others.

Does anyone else have similar experiences ?

Hi Billybob - Yes I have exactly the same experience - its actually far worse with Spotify/Airfoil than with Itunes - happens very few seconds/unlistenable as you say.

I have also noticed that the problem with Itunes aapears to be compounded by high mac system loading/heavy CPU utilisation. By limiting number of simultaneously running applications I can virtually eliminate the problem.

Cmon Apple support ..wake up! Doesnt anyone bother to monitor these forums ? So many people are experiencing the same issue here .. most of the diagnostics have already been gathered by your user community ... do we have to do your whole job for you ?? How long has this been outstanding ...rubbish support !!

Same problems with my Peachtree Nova DAC optical input, also worse with Airfoil. I downgraded to iTunes 7.7.1 which fixed the problem for iTunes, not for Airfoil of course.

Does anyone know if Snow Leopard will bring us a new version of iTunes ?

Airtunes and the optical output of the AEX is a key selling argument and I find Apple very poorly responding on that issue !!
