Changing file icons

Is there a way on my Mac to change all the icons for a specific file type. I know how to do it on a PC, but can't seem to find on my Mac.

Here's my problem. I'm trying out IWork 09 (was using office 2004), and so all my files that are word documents and such have gone from having the word document icon that I like, to having a blank document icon, because IWork pages doesn't have an icon for .doc files. I basically want to make all my .doc files have the word document icon like before. I know how to change the icon for a specific file via "get info", but do not want to have to do an individual change for the 100's of word documents that I have. I'm hoping that there is a way to tell the Mac to make files of this type have this specific icon.

Can you help.

I'm not sure if you can assign a particular icon to a file type, but you can use labels.

Using colored labels for files and folders
You can use colored labels for files and folders to make it easier to find the ones you want.

Click the desktop—the background area of your screen.

Choose Finder > Preferences and click Labels.

Type names for the label colors.

For example, highlight “Red” and type a descriptive word or phrase, such as “For Immediate Action.”

To label a file or folder, select its icon and then choose File > Label, selecting the color you want to use.

You can use Spotlight to search for items by label. Search for items using a search window, and then specify “other” as a search criterion and choose “File label.”

Here's how I assigned the color labels to certain extensions. I selected the .plist files as an example in: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences
Control click one of those files. In the Menu, choose a color label.

Pretty handy!

As you said you are trying iWork and it associated the .doc files with itself and assigned its icon to them.
You could set the "Open With" back to Word, and click the "Change all" button below.
This should (not always works from my experience) re-assign the default Word icon to all .doc files.
Of course, on double click they will open in Word, but you can still open them with iWork by right clicking and choosing iWork from the "Open with".

I am sure that there is a well hidden file somewhere in the system which controls that stuff...
Nerds to rescue!!!

In your Applications Folder go to your iWork folder and select Pages. Right click on it and select ‘Show Package Contents’.

A Finder window opens at the Contents folder. Open it and go to the Resources Folder. Scroll Down to the Pages_Doc.icns file and replace with your preferred icon.

Make sure it’s the same dimensions as the original and the same format, same name too.
