Well, if you are planning on buying music from the Music Store, if you someday decide to get the iPod Nano or the new iPod that plays videos, if you wanna add pictures, contacts or whatever to your iPod then you might wanna install and download those updates.
Firmware 1.4 supports Podcasts for the mini. Unfortunately, it disabled the on-board Smart Playlist updating for the mini.
If you want Podcasts, then update the firmware. If you use Smart Playlists that need to update in real-time on the mini, then stay with 1.3.
There is no downside, as yet, with the 1.3 firmware. You can still use the iTMS (if that is important to you).
I have not updated to 1.4 and see no reason to do so (Podcasts do not interest me).
BTW: 1.4 will not get you picture or video capability as the mini does not support these features.

I'm not interested in Podcasts either but I do want my pictures, contacts, notes and calendar added to my iPod Nano so that's why I downloaded the updates.
My answer was to Harley, not to you. He has a
i mini iPod
and is questioning whether to update
i his
firmware. This has nothing to do with what you want for your
i nano
. The mini does not support pictures. Why you updated your nano is immaterial to the original question about a
i mini iPod.
Firmware updates are product specific. There is a specific firmware update for each iPod combined into the one downloaded software file from Apple. I do not believe that the nano is at 1.3 or 1.4 to-date. If it is, it is a completely different firmware than that of the mini, or photo, or video iPods in any case.

Well geez, I was only making a comment but since you got your hair up over what I said then enjoy it!
I was giving him reasons why I updated the software, which was to have maximum use to my Nano.
Oh that was nice of them. So was that intentional, cause they haven't exactly rushed to fix the problem. Wish I'd known this before I updated.
So I found out that I'm looking updater 2005-02-22. Any suggestions as to where I might it?
Thanks

MY experince is that the updater to 1.4 wrecked my mini.
Take that for what it's worth. Mu iPod is useless now.

I don't think it was intentional, or if it was, it may have been a trade-off.
Many of us keep prior Updater software archived, but I have not seen a website that has them for general download. Try searching the Discussions here. Someone may have provided a link.
