Firmware 1.4 supports Podcasts for the mini. Unfortunately, it disabled the on-board Smart Playlist updating for the mini.

If you want Podcasts, then update the firmware. If you use Smart Playlists that need to update in real-time on the mini, then stay with 1.3.

There is no downside, as yet, with the 1.3 firmware. You can still use the iTMS (if that is important to you).

I have not updated to 1.4 and see no reason to do so (Podcasts do not interest me).

BTW: 1.4 will not get you picture or video capability as the mini does not support these features.

My answer was to Harley, not to you. He has a
i mini iPod
and is questioning whether to update
i his
firmware. This has nothing to do with what you want for your
i nano
. The mini does not support pictures. Why you updated your nano is immaterial to the original question about a
i mini iPod.

Firmware updates are product specific. There is a specific firmware update for each iPod combined into the one downloaded software file from Apple. I do not believe that the nano is at 1.3 or 1.4 to-date. If it is, it is a completely different firmware than that of the mini, or photo, or video iPods in any case.
