Vista, iPhone, "Digital Still Camera" driver issue

Man I've been beating myself up with this problem. Running Vista Home Premium with latest iTunes (8.0.2.20). When attempting to connect my 16GB iPhone 3G, Vista starts a driver installation for a "Digital Still Camera". iTunes pops up and states that it is unable to communicate with the iPhone (so it at least is recognizing it). The iPhone itself is charging but is bogged down by something Vista is trying to do with it (must be why iTunes can't talk to it). I have so far reinstalled iTunes 3 times, tried disabling UAC, tried restarting the Apple Mobile Devices service, and even updated my motherboard chipset drivers (Intel P45). Still can't get this thing resolved. Is there a .inf file I could just download that I can install so that Vista will just recognize it?

It's the cable!!

I was using an aftermarket cable that seemed to work with XP, but for some crazy reason doesn't work with Vista. I grabbed the original iPhone cable and viola!! I was able to swap the cables and reproduce the errors. I have no idea why the cable would make a difference between OS's though. Some electrical engineer needs to be reevaluated IMHO.

I had this same issue, and did a complete un-install of all Apple software, reboot, and a complete re-install of iTunes.

Problem solved.

Simply reinstalling over the existing software did not work for me. I had to manually uninstall (via control panel) and reboot, THEN re-install.

(Then remember to turn off that silly Bonjour).

I have the same issue with Dell Vista 64 Bit and iPhone, 3G does not show up in iTunes 8.02. It works great on Vista 32 Bit. Same phone and same cable. I have reinstalled and done the driver update according to all the ways that apple states. No change. I called apple...no help at all stated that this is not an iPhone issue its a Win Vista issue. I wonder if it can be a Vista 64bit issue????
Any ides

Looks like this is already answered, but I just ran across the same issue and none of these solved it (close though). Instead of updating the Apple iPhone in device manager, I updated the Apple Mobile Device USB driver found under USB Controllers, and that fixed it. It was an XP Pro SP3 machine, with a new iTunes 8.2 install and an iPhone 3G 16GB. After that was updated it worked fine and iTunes recognized it right away.
