Need help diagnosing extremely slow boot, kernel i/o errors

I can't pinpoint the start of my problems to any known event, but about two weeks ago, my MacBook Pro started taking six to eight minutes to boot, and it hangs every time I mouse over or click "help" in the file menu.

I've run hardware test and disk repair and fsck -fy and run all around trying to get this worked out, but nothing has helped.

Not being a hardcore user, it took me a while to find the Console log of the startup, but it seems that there's ongoing i/o errors that are delaying the startup. Anybody have any ideas?

Here's the log:

This is coming up a lot. In Terminal, type in:
*df -l*

YOu are looking at two columns in the output:
The first column is Filesystem, under which you want to find /dev/disk0s2
Once you find /dev/disk0s2, scroll sideways until you get to the *Mounted on* column.

What is the result of the *Mounted on* column for disk0s2?

That's not empty. / is your mount point, in this case your boot volume. Try booting into Verbose mode and try to see where it gets stuck. To do this, restart, and hold down Command-V after the chime.

OK, thanks for looking at this with me.

Rebooted in verbose mode. Saw a 20-second delay here:

Then I get to the login window, which is fine. But then it takes three to four minutes to get from there to being able to actually launch any programs. As I recall, this used to take about 20 seconds.

I'm not sure what is causing this, but it seems like some issue with the harddrive, possibly bad blocks. Backup your data first.

I would boot off your OS disk, and using Disk Utility, Zero-Out your drive (don't just erase, zero-out). Now, reinstall Leopard. If that doesn't work, your HD may have to be replaced.

I ran Disk Warrior and it rebuilt the directory, but said that a "disk error" prevented it from replacing the old directory with the new one.

I have my music in a separate partition and DW said that volume was fine. Hardware Test on the OS X install DVD and the SMART status also said the hard drive was fine, so I decided to reinstall.

I did a zero-out and re-install. Everything works smoothly now. I wish I had tried an install and archive first, because restoring everything turned out to be a major pain. But now the system runs smoothly.

Thanks for your input on this, macwiz.

Need help diagnosing extremely slow boot, kernel i/o errors
