Am in the UK. Work for National Health Service (along with another 1.4 million so not a small entity!)
In its wisdom the mail system that many of us use is changing to MS web Outlook.
Under the old system I could get messages via POP3 or IMAP onto both my MacBook Pro and iPhone. Worked great.
Post migration there's been a major step back. Things will work if logged in via the secure separate NHS N3 network but not via the internet unless using windows and internet explorer. Only possible Apple option is a cut down web version.
I have found that I can however access it using iPhone (with appropriate security) using MS Exchange server. Works fine.
Can't do the same even with same settings using MBP.
Do you have a version of Entourage on your Mac? Mail does not support Exchange (Snow Leopard will!) yet, but Microsoft Entourage supports Exchange via Outlook Web Access. I use this method for my school email, and will continue to until Mail supports Exchange via OWA.
As the reply above says, it's probably a case that the iPhone comes with ActiveSync, a set of Exchange- connecting technologies that Apple licensed from Microsoft. Leopard doesn't have this yet, however Snow Leopard does.
Have you talked to the IT bods at the PCT? I suppose it is possible that they might be able to give you some VPN access so you can log in to the N3 network over the internet. Or they may simply be willing to enable IMAP on the Excahnge server. However without knowing the security architecture it is hard to be sure.
Dermot, what settings allowed you to get iPhone onto nhs.net? What is the domain and server setting etc, can't seem to get my nhs.net details accepted. there isn't anything on nhs net help pages regarding smartphones, just for setting up Outlook. Cheers
Mark
Hi Mark
If youy look in the help section of NHS.net there is a PDF with specific instructions on how to set it up on the iPhone. Works a treat.
If you can't find it let me know and I'll e-mail the link to you.
From memory you set up the new account and put in:
E-mail: your nhs net e-mail address
Server: eas.nhs.net
User name: your user name
Password: your password
Description: what you want to call it on your iPhone.
Have looked in NHSmailuserguide.pdf but can't find any reference to setting up iPhones or other mobile devices, but a bit of trawling finds this for us NHS chappies
http://nww.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/nhsmail/technology/iPhone-with.pdf Nice, can now forward my Dorset nhs.uk mail to nhs.net and on to iPhone
thanks guys
Steven, are you sure that you are using the correct url?
The one I get since the upgrade has changed to:
https://web.nhs.net/ and that lets me login to the mail server.
You should still be able to get the basic service, even with a mac.
Gordon
thanks for the reply Gordon
I should have been clearer - I can get into the web portal from home, but have lost the ability to collect mail via mac mail. It used to be handy to integrate mails received with bento/ical/address book etc at home, but this integration is lost when using the web-based service
dont think there is likely to be an answer to this at the present. I have had the following email reply from NHSnet today on this issue:
Good morning Steven.
Thank you for your email regarding apple mac support.
Unfortunately we do not support the apple mac at present, however this may change in the future.
Kind Regards

Further clarification on iPhone with NHS mail from good helpdesk
Good afternoon Mark
Thank you for your email regarding accessing your nhs.net via iPhone.
The guide you have accessed is for the new nhs.net system which you are scheduled to be migrated to this weekend. As such it will not work at present until you are migrated.
Below are instructions on setting up iPhone on the current system. However since you will be migrated soon I would advise to wait as it will save you having to set up the phone twice in a week.
Email Setup for POP3 and IMAP4
1. If this is the first account you're setting up on the iPhone tap Mail directly. Otherwise, from the Home screen choose Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
2. Choose your email account type. For setting up email to work with your NHS.net service choose Other.
3. Select server type - IMAP or POP, and enter account information.
4. Name - Enter your name
5. Address- Enter your email address
6. Description - Enter a name for the email account.
Incoming Mail Server
7. Host Name - IMAPMAIL1.NHS.NET
8. User Name - the part of your email address prior to the @ symbol
9. Password - Enter your account password.
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
10. Host Name - SMTP1.NHS.NET
11. User Name - the part of your email address prior to the @ symbol
12. Password - Enter your account password.
13. Tap Save.
If you've setup a POP3 account you'll now see the message 'Verifying POP account information'
14. Tap Yes to the question, 'Cannot Connect Using SSL. Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?'.
15. Tap Save.
16. This process may loop around about 2 or 3 times before a connection is made. This process could take a few minutes.
If you've used IMAP settings, you'll also need to follow these additional steps:
1. Download the Inbox folders such as the Sent Items, tap Settings > Mail
2. Select your account
3. Tap Advanced
4. In the IMAP Path Prefix enter INBOX (all capital letters)
I trust this information has been of assistance.
Kind Regards

The new NHS.net exchange based system works perfectly with the new Entourage Beta, all settings are "auto discovered" when you enter your e-mail address, the only thing that isn't is the LDAP settings for the global address book, you just need to enter ldap.nhs.net as the server name and change the default port to 636.
