Imac system discs and CompUSA
I recently purchased a used iMac from a friend who originally purchased the computer from the Knoxville, TN CompUSA retail store in August 2007. I have all the receipts and other documentation from his purchase, but was surprised to find no OS X install discs. I did find two homemade CDs labeled as the system discs, but nothing from Apple. When I asked him about the whereabouts of the system discs, he said the two I have are the ones CompUSA supplied and that he never received any system discs beyond the two homemade ones he included in the sale of the computer to me. He said he didn't like it when it happened to him, but that was the way CompUSA does business. The system came with the "Everything Mac" booklet, but not the "Everything else" envelope that contains the discs I need.
My question: Is this true? Does CompUSA have a policy of retaining the system discs from systems they sell and then supplying in-house created / homemade copies instead? Has anyone here ever heard of a retailer not supplying the system discs that accompany a computer system? I want the system discs so I can reinstall the OS and remove all traces of the previous owner.
Of course, CompUSA is now gone from Knoxville, Tennessee. I have written to them and am awaiting a response, but am not expecting much. I wonder how Apple would respond if they knew this were going on?
And, I do believe my friend when he says that he never received any system discs; he has no reason to lie about it, and he included all documentation from his purchase in a nice binder with all the software, RAM he replaced (512 x 2), everything about the system, just no system discs from Apple.
Thanks in advance for any responses!
