Console app quits unexpectedly

Question

Console app quits unexpectedly

I am trying to debug a problem with Time Machine backups and I need to open the console app to see error logs. However, the console application quits unexpectedly immediately after I launch it, giving this error report:

I just rebooted in safe mode and repaired my disk and repaired all permissions . . . but it still quits.
Another forum post led me to look for the preference file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.console.plist . . . but it does not exist (however I have not tried to use the console on this system before... so that might be why it doesn't exist).

any thoughts or suggestions?

outside of this problem, my system seems to be running very smoothly: no other apps are quitting and permissions and disk repairs revealed nothing out of the ordinary.

Hi,

Was there more to that crash report...? It cuts off just where things start getting interesting. If there was more to it, include up to (and after) the "Binary Images" section

No worries, cheers for the extra info.

You have a few InputManagers installed which might be causing the problem. Try moving all the files/folders in this location to your Desktop:

Hard drive > Library > InputManagers

and retry the Console application (no need to logout/restart).

If that fails, can you try logging into another user account to see if the same issue exists there? Either way, it will give us clues on where to concentrate. If you don't have another account to test with you can create one via System Preferences > Accounts > \[+\].

You're close! The .plist file is in your Home Folder... follow this path:
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. The com.apple.console.plist file is in there! Honest!
I think you were going this way: MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences... way different.

Try deleting that file and rebooting and see if Console behaves.

to Carolyn: I swear! it really isn't there. I know the difference between those two library folders and I included the tilde in the directory to indicate that I was looking in the user home folder's library. (however, I looked in both /library/preferences/ folders just to be sure and a search for "console" yielded nothing in either of those folders)...

to iBod: the input managers trick didn't fix it (and I checked the error report to make sure that no input managers were listed in the Binary Images section . . . they were indeed gone), and a log out and log in didn't fix it. As I feared however, I was able to open the console app in a new test account. for good measure, I snagged the com.apple.console.plist file from the test accounts library folder and threw it into my own account's ~/library/preferences/ folder. . . not surprisingly it didn't work.

is there any hope short of ditching my user account or reinstalling os x?

hey! after I wrote that last post, I restarted for good measure and left the input managers on the desktop (even though iBod mentioned that a restart was not necessary). and now it works!
and naturally, the plist file has also appeared in the preferences folder.

so, I'd like to add some of those input managers back if possible. I suppose i will add them one at a time and see if one breaks it... any other suggestions to find the culprit?

iBod is pretty darn good at figuring out what the culprits are. I think the .plist file isn't there because you need to actually launch the application first. My bad!

Good news! Heh, trust it to be one of the few posts where I specifically mention not to bother restarting/logging out where that doesn't work... It usually works without it, honest! 🙂

Yep, the easiest way to check which one is to move them back one at a time and restart the Console each time.

yeah. . . well thank you both very much for your prompt help.

for those interested: I was able to restore all the input managers... and noticed that one of them was doubled (MultiClutchInputManager.bundle), so I deleted it. Looking back into my (now functioning) console messages, I noticed that this error message has been repeating since early today (and probably long before):

1/26/09 8:47:49 AM System Preferences[1164] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/MultiClutchInputManager.bundle

so I'm going to assume that the duplicate copy of that bundle was somehow causing this error. why that would prevent the console from functioning properly will be left to someone far more knowledgeable than myself. but it works now. so thanks all for your help.
