phone is completely frozen

Question

phone is completely frozen

My iPhone is frozen with the cancel button on the bottom and the "slide to power off" on the top but I can not get either to work. I have tried plugging the phone in to charge and that doesn't help. I have plugged it in to sync, but that has not done anything either.
What should I do?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Try a reset (page 35 of the manual)... hold the sleep and home buttons until you see the apple logo, ignoring everything else. Takes about 5-10 secs and you won't lose any data.

I had tried that a bunch of times and now it finally took and cross your fingers is working (for now).

For future knowledge...if I do a restore via iTunes, will that erase everything I have on it?

Glad it's working. Regarding the restore, I've never had to do that so I'll quote from the manual, page 140...

"If you restore, the latest version of iPhone software is reinstalled, default settings are restored, and data stored on iPhone is deleted, including downloaded applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. In iTunes 7.7, you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on iPhone."
