Unable to move desktop icons. They keep moving back to where they started.

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.5 on my iMac and now I can not move
any of my desktop icons under my log in. I can click and drag them but they snap back to the starting position. I CAN click them to launch programs or open documents. I can drag them to the trash. I am the administrator of this computer.

If I log in as the other user (not an administrator) the desktop items move and stay as they should.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

control-click on the desktop and select "show view options". in the popup click on "arrange by" and change it to "None" or "Snap to grid". the other options use fixed icon positions.
