How do I compress sound file?

This is a procedure I've done hundreds of times before, but have now forgotten how, and two people at Apple support (I have the Apple Care Protection Plan) couldn't help and even said that it couldn't be done. All I want to do is to compress a song in my iTunes library. I can now highlight the song and then click on ADVANCED on the menu bar and a compressed copy of the song will be produced in a fraction of a second. The problem is, I want to change the settings of ADVANCED, but I don't remember how to do that. There is a way to change ADVANCED's settings: format (MP3, AAC, WAV, etc.), bitrate, etc, but I just don't remember how. Anyway, after these settings are made, a click on ADVANCED will produce a copy of the song in accordance with the settings that have been selected.

I know it is extremely easy to do, but I have forgotten. How do I change the settings of ADVANCED?

If you are using iTunes 8 the location of the imports settings has changed. Go to Edit>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings, change your option to the format you want to convert your file to. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create ..... version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format

Thanks. I should have come here first and saved myself several hours of going over the same ground over an over. Even now I almost missed the "custom" button. Anyway, thanks to you I've finally been able to do what I used to do routinely. Next time I'll come here if I don't remember something immediately.

This is such a basic procedure, it makes you wonder about the calibre of people that Apple are hiring ...

Usually, I only have good words for them, but they are only human. My biggest disappointment was a few years ago when I asked for help with SimpleSound, a recording program that used to come with their computers. However, the person I talked to had never heard of it and denied that it existed. I got the same response from someone he consulted. That bothered me, but it was when their supervisor categorically stated that SimpleSound had nothing to do with Apple that I finally gave up. I knew I was right but in the face of three "experts" my conviction was shaken, so I went surfing to find the history of SimpleSound. Well, if I had been wrong, I wouldn't be telling this story, but I wasn't.
