Is this iPhone Stolen?

Hi,

A friend of mine from Toronto, Canada is sending me his first gen iPhone as gift and since this guy is not the straightest guy out there, it might be a stolen iPhone 2G 16Gb....

How can I verify that?

MacBook Pro 15/2.2/2x1GB/120-5400/128VRAM-CAN [MA895C/A], Mac OS X (10.4.11)

it may or may not be stolen, but if its an original iphone and was used in canada, it was probably "hacked" at one point

im not sure, but i think they might be able to look up the serial number and check at an Apple Store...it can be done with iPods, so im assuming the same with iPhones

apple should be able to look up the person who purchased it. when i brought mine in for service, and they were writing up the work order, my friend's name and address appeared on the order because he's the one who purchased it for me.

i'm not sure if they'll do that for you just to check.

Generally, when a phone is reported stolen, the carrier can turn off the cell service (identified by the internal ID number, not the phone number). Pop in a SIM, and see if it works.

I should be receiving it today or tomorrow at the latest. Will try with my SIM card and I will call both AT&T and Apple. Just don't want to use a phone that's been stolen.

the carrier can run the sn and if it's suspended for service then it is most likely hot.

I just received it and called Apple Canada, it's not stolen according to the SN and it only has 80 days on the warranty left. However, the Apple Canada rep told me this phone is "worth ****" and that I should take my wife and kids out for fun! I told him I was planning on buying the iPhone on eBay... :P He says the iPhone 3G is much better. I agree, but since I don't plan on using the 70$+ plan with Fido here and only keep my 20$ plan, the iPhone 2G is enough for me!

I also called the 1-800 AT&T number and according to the IMEI, the phone is not stolen 😀

All in all, I'm very happy with my iPhone 2G 😀 Now I only have to update that 1.1.4 firmware...
