Brand new MacBook 13-inch Aluminum crahes all the time

I bought a Macbook 2.4G with 4G of RAM last week, and the extra RAM has been installed in the shop before i took it home.
My problem is that the day after i first used my laptop, it crashed suddenly, freezing completely (i don't even have the coloured ball spinning, so i think it's not an OS problem), leaving me no choice but to turn it off by holding the power button and to restart it.
I use an external hard drive to keep my data, which is slighlty damaged and can't be repaired on my computer. First i thought my macbook crashed because of it, but it recently crashed the same way without the external HD.
It seems that using many applications (photoshop + itunes + firefox...) increases the chances of a crash.

Does anyone think it could be a RAM installation problem? Or could my external HD have corrupted my mac HD?

Thank you for your help !
