iWeb 09 ftp publishing error - Test works, publish fails

I'm currently in the process of writing the iWeb 3 (iLife '09) edition of "Take Control of iWeb", so I've been following this thread with interest. When I initially set up my FTP settings, I entered them as follows:

Server Address: ftp.tcoiweb09.com
Directory/Path: /tcoiweb09.com

I use Dreamhost for all of my hosting, and that directory/path is a folder under a user folder on their server. This is the way I have Transmit and Cyberduck set up, and both of those applications logged in and allowed uploads with no issues. The FTP test in iWeb worked, but the publish didn't. I thought about this for a minute, then changed the server address and directory path --

Server Address: tcoiweb09.com
Directory/Path: tcoiweb09.com

This worked immediately! My assumption is that the folks at Apple, in their constant effort to make things as easy as possible for users, have accidentally made things TOO easy. In other words, when those of us who are used to using FTP put in the more verbose server address and directory paths with the root slash at the beginning, it screws things up. Perhaps the developers should have realized that most of us are going to enter the paths and addresses exactly the way our hosting providers give them to us!

Anyway, I hope this helps some people. I'm going to write about this situation in the book... It should be out soon at Take Control Books.

I don't know how the folks at Apple do things but, in the other applications I use, the settings are......

Server Address: 73.13.222.293 (Which is the IP number)
Directory/Path: mywebsite.com (Which is the name of the root folder)

Ya, well, what are you going to do. I tried every combination and nothing worked until I switched to Linux. What a headache. People who use my site as a home page said it did not work, so I had to tell them I switched to Linux, which I hate for this reason to cap the P in the URL. I still call foul on Apple part as they need to fix this, but oh well. I'm thinking I should not have waisted the money, but time will tell. I love Apple but I hate this. 😉

Before you got to press with your book, please know that I have done EXACTLY what you have said will work, and it won't. Godaddy says its iweb, Apple says its Godaddy. My test connection works, but publishing fails every time. Godaddy rep told me to try fetch, and from previous posts, this might be my only option as I have spent countless hours trying to publish a VERY basic site for my agency.

I left the pc world in April of 08 and bought a 17in macbook pro, 24in cinema display, airport extreme, wireless keyboard and mouse. I made this investment for Apple's much touted ease of use (my sister is a loyal macuser) but in the back of my mind, I can't help but believe that this would have been easier with a pc. I never knew I would have to spend so much money on 3d party apps for my easy to use mac. First Bento, then MS Office 08, Missing sync for Blackberry, MPEG Streamclip (ok, that app was a free one) then Circus Ponies, now Fetch. Will it ever end?

That was certainly pointless. Cyberduck is free and is used and recommended by countless people in this forum.

GoDaddy seems to be like a lot of hosting companies that don't allow you to create your own folder on the server.

Note that the URL of the Author's site has the double barreled one - ttp://www.tcoiweb.com/TCiWeb2/Home.html
This is probably because the URL is directed to a folder inside a folder on the server.

I really can't think of any good reason to use the iWeb FTP.
I need to optimize my files, add tags and upload folders of music files, images, flash player assets etc.
Unless you only want Mac users to see your site, play your music and watch your movies, then you need to do the work.

I shouldn't need to remind anybody here that most of the rest of the world uses PCs running IE and a lot of people don't know what QuickTime is, never mind instal it.

What I don't understand is why Apple don't spend some of their profits on advertising the benefits of Safari and Quicktime to PC users. I download Safari onto every PC I get my hands on and the owners are stunned at the difference.

The official Apple line is that if you are having problems with the FTP you should revert to publishing to a folder and upload using an application that actually works. Of course iWeb doesn't remember that it has done this and the next time you launch your site it looks like you haven't published it. Well done Apple.
Fortunately, I use a third party application that does remember these little details!

Has a solution been provided by Apple yet? Like many others, I purchased iWeb '09 for the FTP convenience, but for me it fails. Of course, manual FTP/TLS works fine using Cyberduck, and I have gone back to my rsync solution (wouldn't this be an absolutely simple feature to add for those who have SSH access to their webservers?). Yes, iWeb publishing works in a two step process, but as other people have noted, why?

As you can see from other posts, it is not godaddy. It does appear that you need Linux.

I am using iWeb for 6 sites and it is working great. I use direct FTP upload as well as Maestro for some of the larger sites.

Your statement "Don't allow you to create your own folder on server" is not correct. I have one host and I have 6 sites in folders. I do not keep any sites on my root.

GoDaddy should be able to set that up for you.

Do you have an index.html file outside the site folder?

I'm also having the Test works, Publish fails problem. Initially it worked fine. I changed my password with my hosting provider and now it won't publish. I updated the fields accordingly and Test still works, Publish fails. I tried entering the wrong password just to make sure it wasn't rubber stamping the test. Doing so caused the Test to fail. Definitely a problem here.

I had the same problem, then I leaved the "Directory/Path" empty and it worked, it updated my website.

Frustration at a maximum.. and about to throw in the famous towel on this now!!

I have spent the most of the day yesterday, last night (well into the night), and today on trying to figure out how to upload the entire site to FTP.

With no computer literate in this tiny corner of Norway, it is awfully frustrating to hit the wall over and over again. I have even tried publishing to my MobileMe account (successfully), a local folder on my hard-drive (successfully) and upload it with FTP through Cyberduck (connection successfully established but that fails at 75-80% upload).

I have searched the Internet high and low, and found several tips to try out: none of which has worked:

1/ Upload my completed pages to a local folder and use Cyberduck to upload it to FTP account

2/ Include Directory/path with several alternatives: /mysitename/ or mysitename.com

3/ Include no directory/path

4/ Use mysitename.com instead of http://www.mysitename.com as domain

5/ Rename "site name" to just web or use only small caps

I haven't tried Linux based server instead of Windows yet, and I haven't tried renaming all the pages with no space in the names (don't want to).

No matter, I'm at the end of the rope trying to finish the upload of the COMPLETE site now and my patience is well worn. The complete website rests at just above 90MB right now.

Does anyone have any tips or words of comfort? :o
