my new 4th gen ipod the other day decided to stop working. it would not turn on. i used the middle button and menu method. and now my ipod has a blank white sreen with just the back light. it can connect to my computer and such. it makes the click nosie when buttons are pressed as well. when i try to reset it. it goes right back to the white screen while making 2 beeps. that sound like nothing i have heard an ipod do before.
Had same problem. reset, no good; restore, no good. Tried to play the battery down, someone suggested that would work, but it wouldn't go dead and I could only listen to one playlist so many times.
But... After playing the machine for a night and a day, I tried restoring it again, no good. Then, +while hooked up to iTunes+ I tried to reset: pushed the center button and the menu at same time (I did not toggle the hold switch.) This brought up the apple logo on the iPod screen.(First visible item in three days) Then iTunes came up with a prompt. Said I had to "recover" my iPod. I clicked yes. itunes did something, then said "an iPod in recovery mode is detected. You must restore this iPod before you can use it." I said yes on the prompt and now everything is working again.
I tried to reset without doing the toggle thing. It took me thru the restore procedure again after making 5 beeps but the apple didnt come up on the screen & it didnt restart itself.I still have a white screen .Thanks for your help thuogh.
Well my wwhite screen is back. after the acdcidental "solution" the next time I started the nano it was blank. I shut it off and the next time it was working. Now its blank again. It's a buggy piece of poop and I don't think I want to restore it an reload 8 gigs of data every two days.
I am having the same problem.
This is my replacement iPod from a few weeks ago!
I have to say, this is the crappiest product, I've gotten from apple.
I wish i hadn't spent the money.

I suspect the beeps are the iPod's way of indicating that it has not passed some hardware self test, similar to the "chimes of death" sound that Macs make when they don't pass their power on self test. Since the iPod is new, I suggest taking it to an Apple Store or contacting Apple Support & asking them for help.
I started having this problem the day after I got my Nano. I was able to get it going again by just resetting a bunch of times. But it seems this time it's f**ked for good, I now know why I had never got an ipod before; BECAUSE THEY'RE A F**KING HEADACHE.
At this point I've managed to get my nano to shut off by plugging in headphones, getting a song to play, then holding the play button. This is the only way to get the unit to shut down. Otherwise it just displays a white screen. I did some of the 5 r's, but after reading the posts I opted out of restoring. Anyone have a fix for this? This whole experience has been miserable right from needing itunes 8.0 which requires smartcard drivers for some f**cked up reason. If I have to send this unit back, I'll be strategically placing a hot steaming coiler in the box.
I JUST GOT MY IPOD LIKE 4 DAYS AND TODAY I HAD TO CHARGE IT.. SO IU PLUGGED IT IN AND THE SCREEN WENT BLACK AND NOW IT WONT TURN AND THE COMPUTER ISNT RECOGNIZING IT. *HELP ME!*
