connecting ipod nano 4G to home stereo

How do I connect my new 8GB iPod nano to my home stereo system in order to hear music that's on my nano over my home system? What kind of cable do I need. A local electronics store sold me a cable that's supposed to have worked but it only has one jack on each end: one for the ipod and one for the aux jack on the stereo receiver. But I aux on the stereo has 2 jacks, one red and one white. Please help
