They both have + & -. The nano is smaller and uses flash memory so it won't skip - however the case is like the regular ipod so there is the scratching issue. The mini doesn't have the color screen or some of the other options either but it is a nice machine.

You have to decide how you will use it. If you run for excercise then maybe the nano is best. If you are leaning towards the mini then you need to be aware that the stock is dwindling as they aren't making any more.

Either way - get the apple care and a good case. 🙂

Mini: They come in different colors, no color screen., 4gb, 6gb. Kind of thick.

Nano: Slim, tall, color screen. You can do personal pictures, add lyrics to your songs and see album artwork. Podcasts are also available (radio shows). Very fagile and surface scratches easily so if you do get a Nano then get the hardest case you can for it.

Personal opinion: I have both, mini and Nano. I like Nano much better

You guys are forgetting a couple of key things:

1) You'll be able to upgrade the HD in the Mini (even if it's difficult), but I doubt you'll ever be able to increase the memory in the Nano (or any flash-based player)
2) Podcasts, etc. are not a function of the device: they work on all (recent) iPods.
3) If I wanted to look at pictures/lyrics, I wouldn't get a Nano either: I'd go all the way and get the "video" iPod

I've had my Mini for quite some time, and I must say it still looks like "new" (and I carry with me every day to use an appointment/contacts reference).

If you want to buy a mini you better do it soon since they are getting harder to find. I was looking for one and all the places around me were sold out. If you go on line you can only find them in a few places as well. I ended up choosing a mini because, for the same price as the smaller nano you get twice as much space. Also, my son got a nano and it looks totally trashed, that whole scratched screen prob. I am a teacher and the kids show me their ipods all the time and the minis just hold up better.

I usually resist getting into petty arguments, but I have to say YOU'RE WRONG!

If Apple thought that "everybody who didn't know better" should have a cover with their Nano, then it should have been included with the original sale: not an add-on, extra $$ item. My Mini still looks new after almost 2 years, and I DON'T think "protection" should be required for a portable device to not look like cr*p after a couple of months.

And yes, there are folks out there who will replace just about anything on an iPod (Mini or not--including the hard drive) if you want to pay for it.

I just had a similar decision and I purchased a 4 GB Mini last week (eBay). I received it yesterday and am impressed. I've already got my music loaded, playlists recreated and have been using the FM Transmitter while driving. I paid $190 w shipping for a two month old Green model with the Griffin FM Transmitter and a neoprene case (you can find better and worse deals on eBay). I think as a previous poster noted, if you want a Mini, you should get one now before there are no more new or slightly used models available.

I did not narrow my choice down to an iPod Mini or Nano right away (considered IRiver H10/Creative Zen Micro/other iPod models). But Apple rules on usability.

When I was in the Apple store, it was hard to resist the $300 video iPod because it is so small. Still, I wanted my MP3 player for jogging (slowly) and the Mini seems perfect for that (despite the hd).

There are lots of Minis for sale on eBay at the moment. I think my main reason for not going with the Nano is my budget - I wanted to stay under $200 for at least a 4 GB model. I was also concerned about the Nano's size (can something be too small). The mini is the size of my cell phone and I have not put that through the laundry yet - but something the size of the Nano is more likely to end up there someday. Also, just like software, I find it best to stay away from new releases:-)

Its up to you to determine how much music you really need on the iPod (you can get the 6 GB Mini but only 4 GB max Nano)). And remember, its a music player! Using a 1.5" or 2" screen for viewing photos and videos is overrated in my opinion. My "free" cell phone takes/views photos and I never use that feature. View photos on your computer and if you want a video player, buy one of the 7", 8" or 10" portable DVD players. Anyway, thats my 2 cents:-)

Either way, you'll enjoy your choice. Just get a case for either one right away.
