How can I disable internet capabilities?

I bought iPod Touch for my grandkids. I had no idea these things could hook up to the internet. This is NOT appropriate for an 8 year old and a 10 year old and a 13 year old.

Is there a way to disable the internet usage capability?

Perhaps the Safari can be removed somehow?

I need help! Daughter won't allow the grandkids to have their iPod Touch's.

Thanks in advance for any way any one can help me.

Set restrictions:
1 Choose General > Restrictions, then tap Enable Restrictions.
2 Enter a four-digit passcode.
3 Reenter the passcode.
4 Set the restrictions you want by tapping individual controls on or off. By default, all controls are on (not restricted). Tap an item to turn it off and restrict its use.

Turn off all restrictions: Choose General > Restrictions, then enter the passcode. Tap Disable Restrictions, then reenter the passcode.

I'm with your daughter on this one. As a grandparent, I'm sure you want your grandkids to have the very best. However, purchasing each an iPod Touch +without first asking+ your daughter if it's alright isn't proper in my books. If your daughter feels they shouldn't have their own iPod Touches, you should respect her wishes. I may be off base, but I believe this issue isn't as simple as disabling Safari and Mail on the iPod Touches.

P.S. You aren't alone in purchasing an iPod Touch for someone else's young kids and facing the parents' wrath when they find out.

😟

These kids are too little.

well you can't turn off the internet no. BUT you can make sure they don't have access. does their home have a wifi network? because if it doesn't, they can't get the internet on their ipod touches anyway.
if it does, then their parents can make sure the network is secure, using encryption. then the only way they can get onto the internet would be if they had the password inputted into the internet settings on their ipods.

you won't be able to stop them accessing public free networks, but if they are out and about then perhaps they'll be with an adult who can make sure they aren't using it?

If you disable safari, etc, as explained above, then it won't matter if they have a free network or not, they won't be able to get online. Of course, they might figure out how to restore their ipods, and re-enable safari and stuff. I suppose someone would have to check their ipods periodically to see if they have done that.

In the long run its going to be more important to teach them to be safe on the internet on their own. You can restrict them all you want but they WILL find a way to access the internet without anyone looking-- at school, a library, a friend's house, the apple store, etc. As they grow up they will only have more and more access to the internet.

Thank you all for your help.

We see now that the answer isn't easy. They usually are not.

We didn't see the internet capabilities of the iPod touches on the website when we bought them. So it's a shame now to see the problem.

But your info gave us what we need to decide how to handle this situation.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to post.

BTW, my daughter is a widow. The kids lost their dad 8 years ago this June. My daughter has her hands full but has loads of help from her dad and I.

Again, thanks very much. You've provided what we need.

Apple is releasing a new version of the Touch/iPhone operating system, version 3.0, "this summer". It is possible that they have added more parental controls to that version so you might want to do a little research here as more information comes available and see if your problem can be solved through the upgrade.

I will say that closing off the Touch is not the only issue, there are internet cafes, friends with computers, school computers, library computers, etc. I know your daughter has her hands full but she might want to contact her local police department and see if anyone is teaching a class for parents and their children on internet safety.

God bless you, deggie.

Your advice is powerfully wise. And you've all given us a lot to think about and take action on.

The internet safety class would be a mandatory thing. We'll definitely look into that. Many of these posts have brought much more in cautionary warnings to light and although disquieting and daunting, are important to consider with these children.

I'll watch for the updates this summer too. I hope more controls will be available.
I am glad I came here for help once again. I so appreciate the information and concerns.
