iPhoto burned DVD backup won't work

Hi,

I just installed iLife 09 and decided to do burn a DVD in iPhoto 09 to backup some old photos. I chose a folder full of albums to burn to DVD and selected 'burn' and everything seemed to work fine. But when I load the finished DVD into iphoto 09, it shows up in the list, but it shows up as having no photos on it. When I look through the disc in the finder, the pictures are there, but for some reason iphoto won't display the photos or albums. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,
Chief

I sent feedback to Apple on the new iPhoto about burning disks when I first noticed this issue a couple of weeks ago. When the update came out early this week (iPhoto 8.0.1) I was optimistic that the burn would be among the bugs repaired. NOPE! Needless to say I have sent yet another feedback.

This is what happens when I select "Burn" and after I insert the disk and hit the "Burn" prompt:

a window opens with a progress bar titled "rebuilding iPhoto Library"
This takes a while with my 12,000+ photo database but eventually it starts the burn. That part looks normal.

When I insert the disk into my computer (or another with the new iPhoto, I have 4 different Mac models) the disk shows up on the sidebar of iPhoto in "Shares" below "Recent." When that disk is highlighted (and it loads highlighted), it displays my entire database sans photos. Yes, the main iPhoto window shows blank placeholder squares for every one of the 12,000+ images and all of the data (titles, keywords, descriptions, event/album titles & descriptions) for all of the 12,000+ pictures. It only has the images I had selected on the disk but they show in the EXACT position they show in my library. Nobody could find them but me.

Oh, and unlike the prior burned disks from which you could drag and drop the images (and all the data) into the host Library, the new iPhoto only allows you to bring in the pictures (no title, no keyword, no description).

If you look at the disk in Finder it looks like an iPhoto Library package unpacked. The only images it shows are in the modified and original folders.

Anybody got any ideas.

Well this explains why you’re missing the thumbnails - they’re not on the disk at all.

Does this happen with other 09 installations on other machines? Can you burn a proper disk there?

Terrence,

I am not missing thumbnails on the burned disks. Every image I select has the thumbnails. Each of the other 12,000+ pictures in my library is missing the thumbnails when displayed from the burned disk but they all have placeholder boxes.

The only images in those two folders on the disk are what few I select, be it one, four, 10, etc.

Yes, this happens on more than one computer. I have iPhoto '09 on 4 different Macs (iMac G5, MacBook Pro (original), MacBook (original), Mac Pro (early '08)) and they all now burn disks the same crappy way, the entire library of data and only the selected images. All those disks display on any of the iPhoto's the same way, with the entire library but only the few images in the order they appear in the library (all the images not displayed have a box placeholder).

I have only burned disks from 2 of the computers (MacBook Pro, Mac Pro) since the upgrade to iPhoto 8.0.1 earlier this week and viewed those on 3 computers (the MacBook being the one my wife has with her on a trip). 8.0.1 did not address this issue.

I don't really expect anyone to solve this problem, it just needs to be addressed by everyone that experiences it. Send feedback about this "bug" to apple.com/feedback. If you have the time call Apple Care and walk through it with them. The more people that complain the sooner this will be fixed. Squeaky wheel.....

I’m sorry Scott but I don’t understand.

In one post above you say

If you look at the disk in Finder it looks like an iPhoto Library package unpacked. The only images it shows are in the modified and original folders.

Which means that the /Data folder - that holds the thumbnails - is missing, no?

Then you say

I am not missing thumbnails on the burned disks.

But where are they?

Each of the other 12,000+ pictures in my library is missing the thumbnails when displayed from the burned disk but they all have placeholder boxes.

How can you see the other 12k+ photos be displaying from the burned disk?

Terrance,

I never mentioned the thumbnail images because their is no thumbnail folder nor is their a thumbnail data file. One thing I didn't mention was that the images also appear in a folder titled "data". The ONLY thumbnails that appear in iPhoto when the disk is selected are those of the pictures I chose to burn. ALL OTHER images (thumbnails) in the 12,000+ database of mine are missing but each of those 12,000 has a placeholder and all the data associated with the picture (descriptions, etc).

Let's go over this to see if I can clear it up for you...or you could just try burning a disk of your own in iPhoto '09 to see what I'm talking about.

Select pictures from iPhoto and then select "Burn." The iPhoto disk that now results will appear in iPhoto on the left sidebar beneath "LIBRARY" & "RECENTS" as "SHARES."

Select the disk in the sidebar and what you will see in the main iPhoto window is the EXACT same thing you would see if you selected "Photos" under the "LIBRARY" in the sidebar SANS the images. In place of the images you will see boxes, placeholder boxes. All the titles and keywords (if you have that selected) will appear. The ONLY pictures that will show up in this view will be the ones I had selected to burn. Good luck finding them among the 12,000 plus placeholders. If you do find them, double clicking on the picture will do what you have chosen for double-click. The enlarged image will take a few seconds to clear as the disk has to spin up.

I hope that gives you a better "picture." Just try it yourself. If you have an older version of iPhoto you will get a disk that is very usable as it only has the images and data from the pictures you select AND that data and images are drag and drop. This one is pretty worthless. Just finding the images on the disk is impossible and the data doesn't drag & drop with the pictures.

Hope that is a better explanation.

I burned a disk and now I understand and you’re quite correct that this is a change from earlier versions. And I completely agree that it’s difficult to see it as an improvement.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback

As a workaround, if you make an album of the photos that you’re trying to burn then they’ll be eaier to find.

Terrence,

I forgot about the feedback from the Apple menu. Thanks for bringing that up. I have already submitted a half dozen items about the new iPhoto on apple.com/feedback. Several of them were corrected by the 8.0.1 update. This one was not corrected and I submitted another on it.

As to burning a disk from an album...its no different than doing it from the Events or Photos. It still does a rebuild of the library and mounts all the data without the pictures for the entire library. Whoever you give the disk to still has to know how to find the images AND when you drag and drop the pictures from the disk, they still come into the iPhoto Library without the descriptions & titles. I did notice that this time they did import the keywords with the drag & drop. I guess they might have done that before too but it didn't register because all the other data was missing. It's still useless but by burning from an album it adds an extra step. 😉

I called Apple Care to have them help me. It was a pretty short call as kind of washed their hands of it. At least I got it documented. Guess we'll have to wait for 8.0.2 to see if this will get fixed.

To anyone having this issue, at least send feedback (from the iPhoto menu>Provide iPhoto Feedback or at apple.com/feedback) AND if you have some time, call Apple Care (1-800-APL-CARE). The call is free even if your hardware is out of warranty because the software is still in warranty. Do this for any other issue you find. The only way Apple can fix things is if they know about them. The more complaints, the more likely they will address it soon.

Terrence,

While your recommendation can be useful, the point of this thread is the burn not how you organize pictures for the burn. It's not any easier once you burn them as they will display in the disk exactly where you got them from. Try it. Pull pictures from 10 dates all along your database and then burn a disk. Now, try to find them on the disk in iPhoto. Good luck!

Terrence,

Please don't be offended. I've read your posts around the discussion boards and they have helped me, like the reminder of the iPhoto feedback access directly from iPhoto pull down menu. It wasn't that your suggestion doesn't have merit, it's just that it would be more appropriate for another thread.

Either way we don't have a fix for this issue as of yet and I don't see it coming by way of these boards. We have to hope Apple fixes it. Anyone who notices this problem send feedback to Apple about it and take the additional step of calling Apple Care.

P. S. "Fight On!" is from the college I attended, USC. This is taken from the title and the first words of the fight song. It's probably not appropriate on these boards and I've been thinking of dropping it as it has little or no meaning to the majority of people who use these boards as resources.

FIXED!!!

iPhoto 8.0.2 just released as an update. I have installed it and have been testing a few of the bugs I have found, including this one.

I am happy to report that the burn feature on iPhoto '09 is now working the way it should work, the way it did work on previous versions.

Yippee!!!

Two updates to iPhoto '09 (version 8) in just 2 months since it was released sure points to this program being full of bugs. They may not all be fixed with this update (I have already found one that was not) but the burn feature was a big one and it's nice to have it back.

iPhoto '09 will not burn an iPhoto library to disc-it asks for a disc to be inserted, initializes the disc says its getting ready, plays its little blue bar quickly and then says there is an unspecified "error" and it can't burn disc nor can it try again. I have tried it on 2 different internal disc burners, different media etc... It is first time with iPhoto '09. It is not the same problem but perhaps related? Ideas?
