1920x1080HD vs 1920x1080 16:9

In my export using quick time I can select a size. From the drop down menu I can select 1280 x 720 HD , 1920 x 1080 Hd or I can go down further ans selct 1280 X 720 16:9 or 1920 x 1080 16:9. I have seen mention of the upper and lower selections, but not a clear answer about the difference. I have tried the upper and the lower 1920 x 1080 selections exporting as AIC with 1920 x 1080 AVCHD source material and the Quicktime movies and DVD's look the same to me.
Any body out there know whats up with this?

In the days of analogue tv where bandwidth was limited the edges around a picture would often be degraded. The solution in simple terms was to crop the picture by a few lines and the width by a couple of pixels. Lord knows why this has continued now we are about to lose analogue for good but this is basically the reason for the difference.

The upper QT settings (HD 1920 x 1080 for example) will export your movie with a display size of 1920 x 1080 (classic aperture) the lower (1920 x 1080 16:9) will export your movie with a display size of 1888 x 1062 (clean aperture).

This affects display size only, it doesn't mean some of your movie is missing, you can toggle between classic and clean aperture presentation settings in QT pro.
