resetting the SMC on a mac pro

Hi,

I need to reset the SMC on my mac pro, as I had an incident where the fans kicked in like a fighter jet after I shutdown, and didn't stop until I pulled the plug after about Ten minutes of white noise.

The trouble is, the instruction for doing this are a little unclear, as I'm instructed to unplug everything, including the display cable, before reconnecting only the keyboard and mouse, after 15 seconds, before restarting. There is no mention, however, of reconnecting the display cables, which leave a few possible interpretations: 1/ Obviously I'm supposed to reconnect the display cables, or I wouldn't be able to see anything after restarting. 2/ I'm supposed to reconnect the monitor after start up (I think this is supposed to be a bad idea)? 3/ I'm supposed to restart without a monitor, and then do a forced shut down by holding the power button for 10 seconds, after I think it's probably restarted okay (hard to tell without a monitor). After shutting down, I then reconnect the monitor. Clearly, option 1/ is the only sensible interpretation, but as I'm guessing there's no way of knowing if the SMC reset worked or not, after doing it, except a non-repeat/repeat of the problem, I'd like to be absolutely sure. I hope someone can help me.

Many thanks

mac pro 8 core, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 10GB RAM, 4x SATA 320GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda HDs
