Why can't I delete emails? What is mailbox "(null)"?

Suddenly, I can't delete any emails from Mail. I get this message:

+The message "SUBJECT LINE" could not be moved to the mailbox "(null)"+
+The destination mailbox "(null)" does not allow messages to be moved to it.+

Any ideas what causes it or how to fix? Many thanks.

Solution: I've officially stopped using mail.app. Instead have gone back to reading gmail in the browser.

I believe that the Mac mail.app has significant problems buried in it somewhere. user beware.

This is the second big snafu for me in the past year. First, the Tiger-to-Leopard upgrade forced a reinstall of Mail to get it working. Now there's this "null" problem, which seems to have no solution.

My setup is 100% plain vanilla, with no fancy/dumb tweaks or 'plugins'.

I have successfully solved this in my mac mail email.
There is an additional setting in IMAP accounts (Mail Preferences. In each of your IMAP Accounts, select Mailbox behaviors. Uncheck the box under Trash that says, Store deleted messages on the server. I believe the problem is that there are not 'deleted messages' mailboxes on most of our IMAP accounts, that's why it's coming back null. But whatever the reason, that solved my 'can't delete' problem on two accounts, including my .me account.
