Suddenly, I can't delete any emails from Mail. I get this message:

+The message "SUBJECT LINE" could not be moved to the mailbox "(null)"+
+The destination mailbox "(null)" does not allow messages to be moved to it.+

Any ideas what causes it or how to fix? Many thanks.

iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Update: It's now happening on two separate machines. (iMac and also MacBook). This is weird. No software or settings have been changed on either one today.

Also, I see other people having similar issues:

Is there some kind of general Gmail/Leopard 10.5.6 incompatibility going on? (FYI my "null" problem described above is with an imap gmail account).

    final bump

my "mailbox (null)" problem persists. i've tried the few suggestions from other threads without success. (to see those suggestions, search "null")

so my solution will probably be to stop using the Mac Mail.app and instead revert to gmail.com in a browser.

Solution: I've officially stopped using mail.app. Instead have gone back to reading gmail in the browser.

I believe that the Mac mail.app has significant problems buried in it somewhere. user beware.

This is the second big snafu for me in the past year. First, the Tiger-to-Leopard upgrade forced a reinstall of Mail to get it working. Now there's this "null" problem, which seems to have no solution.

My setup is 100% plain vanilla, with no fancy/dumb tweaks or 'plugins'.

I was having the same problems with my .Mac account (the only account out of about 15 which is IMAP) - following the suggestion in the other thread referred to, I disabled the option to store deleted mail on the server. Now I can delete to my heart's content.

I still don't see a viable solution to this message. I've tried resetting weather the mail is left on the .mac server and removing the plist suggestions. I still can't delete from an imap account. I even tried creating a new imap account with gmail and it has the same problem. Is there a solution out there?

Thank you macandrew, that solved my problem.

I have successfully solved this in my mac mail email.
There is an additional setting in IMAP accounts (Mail Preferences. In each of your IMAP Accounts, select Mailbox behaviors. Uncheck the box under Trash that says, Store deleted messages on the server. I believe the problem is that there are not 'deleted messages' mailboxes on most of our IMAP accounts, that's why it's coming back null. But whatever the reason, that solved my 'can't delete' problem on two accounts, including my .me account.
