Can't open Keynote 09 file

I have a file, created in Keynote 09, that I cannot open anymore. I receive the message "Unable to open 'filename' because it isn't a valid keynote document". Same message when double-clicking the file or from the Open... menu. I suspect the file is corrupted as Keynote 09 was behaving strangely when I was editing it (very slow operations). I saved the file and restarted Keynote and that's when the file wouldn't open anymore. I restarted the Mac (MacBook Pro, unibody) and still no luck. I made a copy of the file in the Finder successfully, but I get the same message with the copy. The file can be viewed in QuickLook just fine.
Is there a file repair utility for Keynote 09?

Cheers,
Bill

1. I tried renaming it as zip (FILENAME.key -> FILENAME.zip). Tried to open it. It gave me an error: "Unable to unarchive "FILENAME.zip" into "FILENAME".(Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)" That is a dead end. Tried this on 10.5.5 and 10.6.2. No go.

I thought that you should name it as FILENAME.key.zip instead of
as zip (FILENAME.key -> FILENAME.zip).

Be sure you add the .zip AFTER the .key = .key.zip ending (do not just replace .key with .zip). This changes the file to a zip file and it opens by unzipping!!!

Try it again... and I hope that helps you out. :P

I had the same problem tonight. I figured out how to solve problem. I found on the web that keynote compresses files. So I uncompresses the file using zip. Then I changed the name of the file to filename.zip. Then I used the open command to open the file (open x.zip). Keynote came up with my saved work. Wow! close call. I will save as ppt.

I just spent the better part of a week on a presentation that worked fine then yesterday NOT. It started by graphics were missing and then everything that everyone else it talking about, Keynote wants to quit and will not save or open file again. There are over 35,000 views of this issue what is Apple doing about it? I have used Keynote for a year now with no issues until yesterday.

I had the same issue. NONE of my keynote presentations would open. Despite having the latest version of iWorks (and no other versions), all my presentations that were created and saved in Keynote would not open. All gave the error "You need a newer version of Keynote to open this document"

I can believe Apple has not sorted this out yet. This is a disaster if it happens the night before a presentation.

I tried Rich Pickets fix above and it worked ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11534786#11534786)

Come on Apple... sort it out

Thank you so much, Roadpizza!!

I edited my keynote files early morning for today's class. ( I could open on that time)

And I found my file couldn't open just before the lecture.
I couldn't manage to fix that time, and done the presentation with another theme.

I try to find the solution to save my file because It took long to make!

Finally, I found this thread and this post.

It really works for my file.
2 keynote documents couldn't be open.
But both files can be open now in this way.

Yes, god save me.

Thanks a lot!

I know this problem has been around for a while, but I figured out a fix on how to rescue your corrupted keynote 09 documents!

1. Make a backup of your document with a different name (in case you make a mistake in these steps)
2. Change the extension of your keynote 09 document to .zip
3. double click to expand the archived file. You see a bunch of PDF files in there, an index.apxl and a .plist.
4. Make a new presentation in keynote 09. It doesn't have to have any content. Save it as a Keynote 08 document (choice in the pull down menu)
5. Control click on the keynote 08 file you just saved and choose "show package contents" from the contextual menu.
6. Go back to the folder you uncompressed from your keynote 09 document and move all of your files into the keynote 08 package contents folder.
7. Close the window and open your new keynote 08 document in keynote 09.

It should work. You may have to replace some things or may see some question marks for missing graphics or effects, but it beats starting from scratch.

Good luck!

Firstly I wanted to thank Roadpizza, the zip and unzip worked perfectly.

Secondly I wanted to find out why my Keynote presentation was being corrupted.
I was importing some graphics (from Illustrator CS3) and some of these where showing an error after I re-opened the file.
After some digging I noticed that a soft return (shift-return) was the problem.
I replaced all my soft returns with a normal return and all is well 🙂
BTW, The font was the truetype system font Arial.

I figured out how to fix this problem after hour of freak'n out!

1. Get info on file

2. Change extension to ".zip"

3. Right click (or control click) and open with "Archive Utility"

5. The file will look like a folder... open it

4. Find the file named index and re name "index.apxl.gz"

5. Close Folder

6. Get info and add ".key" extension

7. File menu and open!

Good Luck!
