Changing font in iMovie 09

You can change the fonts in iMovie Preferences to your favorites.

Once in the app & after choosing the title hit the Font button in the viewer window.

that's correct... some of those themes are indeed designed as is.
But if you add a title like lower third or centered and many more you can pick the font you wish.

Wow, that's really an unfortunate limitation. Thanks for the information, though! I've been fighting this one all morning!

I found similar limitations with text effects. For instance, I liked the lens flare visual effect but didn't want text with it (in my case I didn't want any text at all...). There aren't any options for doing this. Very frustrating. However, I have found that sometimes with the text effects you can "go around the back door" to get it to do what you want. In the case of the lens flare, I chose that text effect but deleted the "text here" and then didn't add any text. Try it - it works. If you want the boogie nights visual without that font, I bet you could add it using my method (deleting the text box in essence) and then add a different text box to it separately so you can select your own font. I think this program is one where you really have to think outside the box to get it to do what you want sometimes.

That is definitely an interesting working around! I just tried it and I can confirm that it works. (It opens up some interesting new options, too!) The truth is, though, that it seems a little bit odd to me that I can open the font dialog box, change the font, and then see no change reflected in the text. It feels like a bug and a fairly reasonable thing to want to do... All the same, thanks for the interesting tips! I will find a way to use them!

Oh - one thing - I did have that "phantom text" problem where the deleted "text box" did come back once or twice, but I just deleted it again and it is fine now. I've had that effect working now for over two weeks and no further reverts. I even exported the movie and it works great.
