Same here.....

My setup at home is a Telstra Wireless Gateway (Netgear), one airport express connected to my beyonwiz PVR, one airport express connected to my Mac Pro, and a macbook. All these devices are on the wireless network and the iPhone happily played with all of these on wi-fi until Sunday morning.

First of all there is a very weak signal. It will basically see the network interimittently, and when it does see it, will not connect. The message is 'unable to join xxxx network'. Note that it has been happily working on wifi for over 6 months.

Recent changes to my network was the addition of the second airport express. However, the phone has been working for two weeks solid since I did this.

Last app installed was skype - but again - happily played until Sunday.

After doing some googling I have tried the following troubleshooting actions:

1) Turned phone off and on. Asked the phone to 'forget' my network. No change
2) Restored iPhone from backup and re-installed 2.2.1 - No change
2) Reset all network settings on the phone - No change
3) Took all protection off of the wireless modem/router ie WEP psk - No change
4) Changed the ip range on the modem - no change
5) released and renewed DHCP lease that the iphone had established - no change
6) Tried to enter a static ip address based on what the other machines on the network were using - cannot conclusively say I did this correctly as I was not sure what to put in the 'domain' field, but still - no change

Today I tried to get the phone to connect to another network that I know has worked in the past. Same symptoms - weak signal and unable to connect.

I fear the wi-fi in the phone has gone belly up. My only hope is that many, many people on the web have experienced very similar problems - so I am hoping its some sort of networking settings issue.

This is the best thread I have found on the web re this.....

yes - ditto to your list - been round this loop 10 times
Something in the 2.2.1 release has either caused this or made whatever was already there much worse. Like the Borg ..... regression is useless You will be assimiliated into the new 3G collective.

There has been a lot of work done by a lot of people on this thread and if this problem is on the increase at least it gives it an aggregation point !

Just a warning to everyone,

I got my iphone replaced for my issue of "not able to find any wifi network".
before the replacement, they were checking if i have "dip" the phone into water..I guess, if I have place the phone in the freezer...water might have gathered at the 2 special paper in the phone and my warranty might have been void !

take care...get it replaced if your warranty is still valid.

Hi there,

Try this method and its WORK NO DOUBT..Thank you to 'defiantmacho'.

Here's the final solution I found by old fashioned trial and error (AND what a pain in the butt it was to figure out). It worked, is still working and in full WiFi strength!
I have a Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router, but I suspect it will work fine with most routers, specially Netgear.

This is what I did:
1- I logged into my "WiFi Access Point/Router" (Meaning the website where your router's settings are). In my case it is 192.168.1.1 (This is the set Access Point for my router. You'll need to find yours. It should be located on the back label of the router itself.
2- Once I logged into the router's "Access Point" site, I went into "Wireless Settings" located in the menu on the left pane of the screen.
3- Here I chose "WPA-PSK..." as the security to be used, AND, I entered a PASSWORD. This is to maintain the Network Secure and block leachers from using my internet for free!
Don't forget to "Apply" the changes before going to the next step, and wait for it to finish will you? It will need a few extra seconds after it completes (the little antenna lights up on the router). MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD!
4- NOW, on the left pane (the menu to the left of the screen, remember?), go into "Advanced Wireless Settings". See that button that reads "Setup Access List"? Click on it! :P
5- Once in, DISABLE "Turn Access Control On". In other words, uncheck it.
6- Apply Changes, and for God sakes wait for it to finish!
7- On your iPhone, go to "Settings", then "General", scroll down to the end and tap on "Reset". Don't worry. It will not reset your iPhone. It will merely bring a new menu. Now from this menu, tap on "Reset Network Settings". Let the iPhone throw its fit... it's OK!
8- Try to log into your WiFi network using the password you were supposed to have written down in step 3 above.
9- You should be able to connect now to your protected network with full strength and all!
ENJOY!
I hope this helps you as it did me...

Probably a stupid question, but did you try restarting your modem and router? If you haven't tried this already, this very well may solve the problem. To do an effective restart, shut off your modem AND router for atleast 10 seconds. After 10 seconds has gone by, first turn on the modem, and let it fully connect (it is done when all of the normal LED's are working as they normally do). Once the modem is fully connected and up & running again, turn on the router. Hopefully this helps.

zarizi don't be ridiculous. This problem is not limited to NetGear wireless equipment. It's a problem with the phone. I have the issue with the phone associating but not passing IP traffic with several different vendor's APs, including Cisco, Trapeze, and Apple's own Airport Extreme/Express gear.

My phone has this problem on our corporate wireless net that uses WPA-Enterprise, and at home using WPA2-Personal.

Some of what people are reporting in this thread is not actually problems that started with 2.2.1, but rather simple misconfigurations of their wireless networks (either on their phone or on their AP).

I am so glad that 9 to 5 Mac linked to this thread. I had been having wifi problems with my first Gen iPhone for a few months and I had assumed that it was a problem with my phone. The freezer trick worked immediately, as many in this thread have noted. My phone is out of warranty, but I believe that apple must do something to make things rights if it is in fact a glitch that resulted from their software updates. Spread the word! We need to make sure that the blogs and tech sites start covering this issue. I'm writing Gizmodo, Ars, macrumors, engadget, and appleinsider.

Hi

I spent the time and read this from the top! Phone has not worked since update about 2 weeks ago. I just found this thread and tried the freezer tip for the first time today. (Before I go further, my liquid contacts are bad) even though I've never dropped in water. It's humid here in Texas and the heat is bad. So there went my chance at a new phone because I am still under 12 month warranty.

My problem for two weeks has been "unable to join xxx network". The network shows up with 0 bars, and never connects. Took it out of the freezer and turned it on and it connected for the first time in 3 weeks!

All that said, as soon as I opened Safari to use the Wifi (WiFi icon appeared when it hadn't in 2 weeks) it went right back to using EDGE & 3G. I thought I had redemption, but it was only for a brief moment.

Yup - you've got the same lurgi as the rest of us. Try the battery capacity thing ..... wait until your phone is around 40% of the battery capacity and see if wifi kicks in. Also, when you take it out the fridge, keep it sitting on the table so the heat from your hand doesnt warm it up too quickly - I found I could get some use out of it.
I know what you mean about humidity - I had my iPhone in Florida last year and the moisture sensors must have triped there as they are both pink ...How is your battery life at the moment, how old is your phone, 2G or 3G and have you modified it in any way ?

I also have a first gen iphone (purchased the day it came out, June 2007) with this problem. I did not get the AppleCare for it - darn it. However, I don't think anyone should put their phone in the freezer. Some are saying that there is nothing to lose if you are out of warranty. I'm not so sure, recall what happened with Dell on the laptop batteries and the follow-on lasted for months/year.

If this should turn out to be software upgrade issue (from 2.2.1) related to the battery, a recall could/really should come out. I'm just saying if you put the phone in the freezer, you then have a ping-pong paddle for sure, and any goodness from freezing only lasts for hours anyway.
