Heart Shape, group shapes and add photo?

Hi

I am trying to make a poster that has several hearts with photos in them.

I have created a heart shape by making a diamond and two circles and grouping them together. Now I would like to put a photo in that shape but it seems that the fill function is grayed out. I can't even change the color. I then tried to use the heart shape as a mask over the photo but can only use the standard shapes, not my grouped shape. I have tried using the freeform shape tool but just can't seem to make a heart with it. Any suggestions on how to approach this?
