iPod Touch connecting to 802.11 network

My school uses a hidden network that has 802.11 security where you have to enter the password and username assigned to to you in order for the wireless signal to show up. Is there a way to configure this?

MacBook Pro, PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

not without asking the school network admins to give you the password.

Yes, I have a username and password, but there is no 802.11 option under security when I try to add a network.

Peter,

802.11 a/b/g/n are all protocols for transmitting wireless networking information. The Touch uses 802.11g. The questions for your administrator are "what type of encryption do we use and what is password or hex key do I need to log on"?

Typical encryption methods are WEP, WPA, WPA2. You will need to tell your Touch what is used before you enter your password or hex key.

Well I have my own personal username AND password that the college assigned to me. Does that mean it can only be a certain encryption?

The fastest way to find out is contact your school's network administrator. You need a network name and password to connect to services provided on the network (like e-mail), but you need just a password to connect to the network (ie. internet).

We can provide general answers, but this one requires you contact your IT department for some help.

I already said in my original post that it IS an 802.1x. And luvlabs, what you said isn't true for this network. You need a username AND a password to access the internet.

Settings>Wi-Fi>Other> Select the network Security type and enter name and password.

.. and 802.11 is NOT a security type. You must ask the network administrator what security is being used.

But 802.1x is, and that is what I think the OP is trying to say is the network encryption for his school network. He has a user name and password which are both needed to log onto the school network. However, the iPod touch does not support 802.1x for some reason. Which is crap for me because I can not use Wifi at 90% of the places I go.
