Memory stick back up

I have a USB 1GB memory stick and 324.0 MB on my I-tunes. I'd like to back-up my I-tunes to the stick but there are no directions on I-tunes other than backing up to CD or DVD. Should I only back-up to an external hard drive and not a memory stick (isn't that the same as an external hard drive)?
