It is possible that the issue you're describing is a hardware issue. Are you using any type of case on the iPhone? If so, remove it and test.
Does the iPhone respond when you reset it?
Reset the iPhone by holding down the sleep/power button and home button until you see the Apple logo (ignore the "Slide to Power Off" prompt).
Connect to iTunes and Sync to test.
