Error 2096

I do not have iTunes installed and I am not running Quicktime in compatibility mode, however I am still getting error 2096. I am running Windows XP x64. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Well, it turned out the problem was really a rather stupid mistake, but I'm gonna put it here in case someone else has this issue. Windows Update hadn't yet installed Service Pack 2 when I posted this; once it did, Quicktime worked just fine. This should probably be added to the knowledge base: this error also occurs if SP2 isn't installed yet.
