On-off button not working

I have a first-generation iPhone which works fine, except that slowly the on-off button on the top became less and less reactive, and now it does not work at all (at least to turn off the phone or lock the screen). A tech at an ATT "device" store looked at it and said there is no water damage. After I upgraded to the last software version before 2.2.1 it worked much better, then it got worse and stopped working altogether with the later upgrade (though I don't know if there is any relationship).
Also, is there any way to turn off the phone without using the top button?

Hey,

Is there a protective case or film on the iPhone? If there is try testing without it.

Then try the general tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1650#faq22

If the issue persists, the iPhone may need hardware repair. Make a reservation to have a Genius at a local Apple retail store take a look at it or call AppleCare.
