Merge Gmail & iPhone contacts

I have hundreds of contacts in Gmail - most of these are email addresses only.
I also have hundreds of contacts on my iPhone- most of these are phone numbers only.

What's the easiest way of merging these two records into one file?

And then what's the best way of ensuring both iPhone and Gmail stay up-to-date with new additions (without using Mobile Me?!)

Thanks

I don't know of any merging solution, but your 2nd question is now easy to answer since Google introduced syncing for iPhone. It's as easy as creating a Microsoft Exchange account on the iPhone, entering your Google credentials, and choosing Calendar, Contacts, or both. Syncing is over-the-air just like MobileMe.
