Repair or Reinstall QuickTime

Hi, guys. This is really an iTunes problem that involves QuickTime. When I try to open iTunes, I get the following message:

"The iTunes application could not be opened. A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall Quicktime. (-42404)"

This is news to me; everything was working fine yesterday. How do I fix QuickTime without having to buy the new download? I just want the free version that came with my iTunes to work again.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

QuickTime is free; the only version you have to pay for is Pro which gives you editing and format conversion capabilities.

Do a repair install of iTunes. Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install. Then go into Add/Remove and select iTunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair". That should reinstall any missing components.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I have followed your suggestion, but the problem continue, woul you have any other idea to my problem, I have installed Quick Time 7.6 and Itunes 8.1.

I'm trying to use my Ipod Nano, but it's getting impossible, my first problem it's that Itunes does not recognize my Ipod, when I tryed to follow the 5R sugestion to fix the problem, now I'm with this problem that now I can't open Itunes. I'm getting nuts with this product. Sometimes I think I will have to do a computer sciense course to solve this problem.

I had this same issue, but a repair and uninstall/reinstall failed to work. This forum post below worked for me though.

After uninstalling the 7.6 version of quicktime, I also ran the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301). I am not sure if it's needed for this to work, but I did it just in case. This has helped me when removing improper registry settings leftover after uninstalls.

The version in the quicktime in the link above is 7.5.5.
