Skype - Is Credit Card Information Necessary for Skype ID#?

Have you recently signed up for Skype and this answer is based on actual experience?

The Skype website is not clear at all concerning credit cards when this program is only used for computer to computer calls. I have a natural reticence to download programs and then trash them; otherwise it is obvious to just experiment.

I have no problem at all using video iChat between 2 Macs. Using iChat between a Mac and a PC sometimes causes a bit of grief and I wish to avoid that.

I was already aware that the computer to computer calls were free - my question was limited to what information was required before signing up for Skype for the first time. I was concerned that Skype would ask for a credit card number before even issuing an account number just in case one made a computer call to a landline phone, for example, which would involve a charge.

I do not want Skype to have my credit card information (I try my best to prevent identity theft) and it really is not clear on their website whether that CC# is required beforehand. I do not want to download anything until I know for sure.

I apologize for not having made that clearer in my original post.

I finally downloaded Skype and authorized my account.

No credit card information was asked for (nor given).
