Songs Disappearing from iTunes

I've seen other threads on this marked as answered, but they clearly were not based on the posts in them. At first I thought I was going crazy, or maybe had lost some music when I transferred from my old machine to my new one, but now I have songs I know I bought since moving to the new machine that have disappeared. Not just randomly missing songs, but entire missing albums too. Of course, since backing up my music consisted of simply copying the iTunes folder to an external drive (admittedly lazy way, sure) it happily overwrite the folder as I told it to and thus my backups are missing the songs too. This is complete crap, and is NOT answered as the other threads claim. Even if support allows me to re-download everything (at this point, I couldn't even tell you for sure what I am missing since I don't recall everything I've bought) what stops this from happening in the future? If my hard earned money is just going to vaporize off my hard drive at random when I am trying to play by the rules and be legal, give me one good reason not to just save that money and just start pirating everything? Because as much as I don't like pirating, I don't like buying an entire CD for one good song even less, and I like having stuff I bought simply disappear even less than that.

What is the fix for this problem? If Apple lets me redownload everything, where is the proof this won't happen again? I NEED to have a legitimate answer to this question or you and the music industry can kiss my money goodbye. Limewire will be my new music source.

Normally all you need to do is copy the entire iTunes folder from one computer to the other. See make a split library portable for how to fix things if the media isn't in the usual place. There are tools or techniques to confirm every track that is referenced by the library can be found, and you can import the media folder to make sure that every file in the media folder is connected to the library.

Just recently updated itunes from 10 to 11 and found all my old playlists and all my my non purchased music has disappeared from my library. I went through irip for hep and using my ipod all my music showed up again. The problem is now it's in a file that itunes says is not for my ipod to access so can't get my music back into my library. I feel angry that all myCDs, many of which are no longer available have just disappeared or unaccessible...this seems illegal...a form of careless theft.

Any suggestions how to open the file and back into my library for playlistswithout downloading everything back onto my ipod?

PS.

I went through irip on the suggestion of a 'genius' at the Apple store... It initially worked but as mentioned before, the next days all my music was in a file 'not for my ipod'... What the....?

Add me to the list of users with missing iTunes files.

The thing is it seems as though some of my files are still there. If I look at my external hdd through finder the album appears completely empty even though ther is only 2 of 13 files in the album that has the exclamation mark.

If I "open in finder" for one of the still linked files of the same album it opens up at the same location showing a empty folder.

However....if I instead of clicking "show in finder" and just copy the link show at the bottom of the"get info" window and past the link into the finder "go to folder" the file actually appears for a brief moment in the finder showing that there is a file in the previously empty folder....***..!?

I have tried changing the link to suite one of the missing files but no luck.....

I guess I'll just have to try and re-rip those 273 missing odd files scatterd through my 15,000 + strong music collection.
