Unibody Macbook Pro .. Overheating ?

Hello,

Folks, today while doing some normal computing stuff such as surfing the net using firefox and using aMSN, iTunes with an average of 50% cpu usage, I found that my computer temp "as shown on iStat" is 72C ! is that overheating ? or is it normal ?

Now the cpu usage is 20% and the temp is 53C .. Anyclues before returning this machine to the apple store?

Thanks,

Macbook Pro 15.4" Unibody, Mac OS X (10.5.5), 2.53 GHZ, 4GB RAM, 250 GB HDD

Hi there

Same here. I just made an upgrade from my older MBP (2.6 GHz, 4 GB, 200 GB) to the new unibody version (2.8 GHz, 4 GB, 320 GB). My old MBP is running at a consistent idle/moderate activity temp of 50 degrees celsius while the new unibody MBP runs at 65 degrees celsius at the same load. In both cases the fans are running at around 2000 rpm.

15 degrees hotter is simply ridiculous!

Definitely not overheating. I would say that this is completely normal if you're using the 9600GT. Try using the 9400M for a bit; the temperatures should fall by about 10ºC. You're well within the working range of the machine though.

My MBP averages around 40c doing light internet work, and bumps up to the 50s when I crank up VMware or other applications that start stressing the CPU/GPU. I usually keep my unibody MBP on the 9400M GPU because it tends to run cooler and gives me the option of just unplugging and moving around. Otherwise, I'd have to close all my apps and log out to switch the GPU when I want to use the laptop on my lap in the living room as opposed to being hooked up to my desk
