I get the same -48 error message when I try to synch. I have tried to restore factory settings from itunes and I get the same synch error. I have tried to restore settings on the actual ipod but it won't delete the content on the ipod. I have checked the software version and it is the same as the pc version.
This has all happened since i installed the latest version of itunes and now the ipod won't play the music at all and i can't remove it.
Any ideas, anyone???

Open iTunes and plug in your iPod and you might see the dreaded error (-48) message pop up on your screen, which will prevent your iPod from syncing. That means you can’t add any more music, movies, pictures, anything no matter how much memory there is still available. This problem is rampant in the newer generation of iPods and Apple has yet to address the issue, besides a lot of whiny complaints on their message boards. The best way to fix any iPod problem is to either reset it by pressing the menu and center button simultaneously or restoring the iPod to factory settings. Restoring your iPod will delete everything on the hard drive but there are a few alternatives you can try before restoring.

Instructions

Step1:
Put the iPod in Disk Mode. First you must reset the iPod then as soon as the apple icon pops up on the screen press and hold the center and play buttons.
Step2:
Connect iPod to computer and you can then run a hard drive check. Run an error check on the iPod hard drive (My Computers, iPod, Properties, Tool, Error Checking). This could correct any errors in the hard drive.
Step3:
Hard drive check could fix the problem, but is not guaranteed to work. You could also try to reinstall iTunes by simply uninstalling and then going to the website to download and install again.
