how to "embed" image on email

I am trying to "embed" image on the promotional email and contacted apple and earthlink (where I have website) and got the answer that I cannot unless I have entourage or outlook.
I followed the instruction of earthlink reps and the result I see on webmail was the image is attachment, thus most of the recipient won't see the image unless they open it. I am confused because a friend who has the same environment with hostmonster could successfully "embed" it. Is there any way I can do this without buying those mail applications?
thank you for you advice!!

This question comes up from time to time so I suppose it is a real problem at times for some users. I really don't know the answer but I'd like to know more myself. What is it about Entourage or Outlook that gives the desired result? Do you have to compose an HTML e-mail to get the embed to work all the time? Can Thunderbird do this?

Steve M.

I use these two, I only keep Mail around to try to help with all it's problems...

Eudora, (can Import your Mail from Mail)...

http://www.eudora.com/download/

Thunderbird...

http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

But still, I have my settings for receiving emails on my end to text only, so it wouldn't do any good to send me an HTML mail... old habit, that how PCs get infected a lot of the times.

It's mostly a moot point now, because good Protection software now usually checks everything, while it used to just check attachments for viruses, as well as many buffer overrun problems have been cured.

One past vector was including something like test.gif.pif.exe, Windows would see it as a GIF, try to display it, but it would actually be an executable file.
